Alabama uses a progressive state income tax with marginal rates ranging from 2% to 5%. As with the federal system, only the portion of your income that falls inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.
Before the brackets apply, Alabama subtracts a standard deduction of about $3,000 for single filers.
These state brackets are applied in addition to federal income tax and FICA, all of which are withheld from each Alabama paycheck.
What changes an Alabama paycheck?
The Alabama Department of Revenue's January 2026 withholding booklet uses three brackets: 2% on the first $500, 4% on the next $2,500 and 5% above $3,000 for single filers and heads of family. Married filers get $1,000 and $6,000 as the break points.
The standard deduction depends on income. Up to $25,999 it is $3,000 for single filers, $8,500 for joint filers and $5,200 for heads of family. Above that it drops for each $500 of income or part of $500, by $25, $175 and $135 respectively, until it settles at $2,500, $5,000 and $2,500 once income reaches $35,500. The calculator applies that schedule.
Personal exemptions are $1,500 for a single filer and $3,000 for married or head-of-family filers. Alabama also lets you subtract the federal income tax you pay before applying its rates, with no cap in the booklet formula. The calculator uses its own federal tax estimate for that deduction, so it can differ from your actual federal withholding or tax credits. Not modeled: dependent exemptions ($1,000 each up to $50,000 of income, $500 up to $100,000, $300 above) and local occupational taxes. Birmingham, for example, charges 1% of gross wages based on where you work.
