Iowa levies a flat state income tax of 3.8%. Unlike a progressive system, the same rate applies to all of your taxable income rather than rising as you earn more.
Iowa applies a standard deduction of about $16,100 for single filers before the tax is calculated.
On top of this 3.8% state tax, every Iowa paycheck also has federal income tax and FICA (6.2% Social Security plus 1.45% Medicare) withheld.
What changes an Iowa paycheck?
The Iowa Department of Revenue's 2026 withholding formula multiplies taxable wages by 3.8%. The formula subtracts a simplified amount of $13,000 for most workers, $19,500 for heads of household and $26,000 for married couples with one earner, and these differ from the deductions used on the return.
This calculator estimates the annual liability rather than the withholding formula. It subtracts the federal standard deduction of $16,100 for a single filer, $32,200 for joint filers and $24,150 for a head of household, and it applies a $40 personal credit per filer. Those deduction and credit figures come from Tax Foundation's 2026 table, so the result can differ from what an employer withholds.
Iowa has no local income tax, but school districts can levy a surtax on the state tax, which is not included. There is no state disability payroll deduction for employees, and dependent credits are left out.
