How taxes work in Mississippi

Mississippi uses a progressive state income tax with marginal rates ranging from 4% to 4%. As with the federal system, only the portion of your income that falls inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.

Before the brackets apply, Mississippi subtracts a standard deduction of about $2,300 for single filers.

These state brackets are applied in addition to federal income tax and FICA, all of which are withheld from each Mississippi paycheck.

What changes a Mississippi paycheck?

The Department of Revenue's 2026 schedule taxes the first $10,000 of taxable income at 0% and everything above it at 4.0%. Taxable income is wages minus the standard deduction and the personal exemption.

The standard deduction is $2,300 for single filers, $3,400 for heads of family, and $4,600 for married couples. Personal exemptions are $6,000, $9,500, and $12,000 for those same statuses, so a single worker earning $18,300 or less owes no state income tax.

Each dependent adds a $1,500 exemption and age or blindness adds more, and this estimate leaves those out. Mississippi cities do not levy an income tax on wages.
