Missouri uses a progressive state income tax with marginal rates ranging from 2% to 4.7%. As with the federal system, only the portion of your income that falls inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.
Before the brackets apply, Missouri subtracts a standard deduction of about $16,100 for single filers.
These state brackets are applied in addition to federal income tax and FICA, all of which are withheld from each Missouri paycheck.
What changes a Missouri paycheck?
The Missouri Department of Revenue's 2026 withholding formula taxes the first $1,348 of Missouri taxable income at 0%, then applies 2%, 2.5%, 3%, 3.5%, 4% and 4.5% to each following $1,348 slice, and 4.7% above $9,436. The same brackets apply to every filing status, so almost all of a typical salary is taxed at 4.7%.
Before the brackets apply, the formula subtracts a standard deduction of $16,100 for single filers, $24,150 for head of household and $32,200 for a married employee whose spouse does not work. Those amounts match the 2026 federal standard deduction.
Kansas City and St. Louis each charge a 1% earnings tax on wages. Residents of either city owe it wherever they work, and people who work inside the city limits owe it even if they live elsewhere; pick the city in the calculator to include it. The rest of Missouri has no local income tax. Dependents, credits and deductions taken only on the annual return are not modeled.
