How taxes work in Montana

Montana uses a progressive state income tax with marginal rates ranging from 4.7% to 5.7%. As with the federal system, only the portion of your income that falls inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.

Before the brackets apply, Montana subtracts a standard deduction of about $16,100 for single filers.

These state brackets are applied in addition to federal income tax and FICA, all of which are withheld from each Montana paycheck.

What changes a Montana paycheck?

Under House Bill 337 the top rate fell from 5.9% to 5.65% on January 1, 2026. The 4.7% rate applies to taxable income up to $47,500 for single filers, $71,250 for heads of household, and $95,000 for joint filers. Above those amounts the 5.65% rate applies.

The Department of Revenue now bases withholding on the federal standard deduction for the employee's filing status: $16,100 single, $24,150 head of household, and $32,200 joint. Montana allowances and the old state deductions no longer feed the withholding calculation.

There is no local income tax on wages in Montana. This estimate does not model personal or dependent exemptions or any state credits.
