How NYC income tax works

New York City residents pay three layers of income tax on wages: federal, New York State and New York City. The city tax is the reason a paycheck in Brooklyn or Manhattan is smaller than the same salary in Buffalo or Albany.

The city starts from the same taxable income as your state return. In this calculator that is gross pay minus the New York standard deduction. Four graduated rates apply to that amount, from 3.078% to 3.876%. Because the rates sit close together, the city takes between about 3.1% and 3.9% of taxable income at any salary. Employers withhold it alongside state tax.

What this estimate leaves out

  • Pre-tax deductions such as a 401(k), health insurance or commuter benefits, which lower taxable wages.
  • New York disability and paid family leave payroll deductions.
  • Dependent exemptions and city or state tax credits you may claim when you file.
  • The Yonkers resident surcharge and any income other than wages.

Frequently asked questions

What are the NYC income tax rates for 2026?

New York City taxes resident income at four rates: 3.078%, 3.762%, 3.819% and 3.876%. For a single filer the brackets change at $12,000, $25,000 and $50,000 of New York taxable income; for married couples filing jointly at $21,600, $45,000 and $90,000.

Do I pay NYC income tax if I work in the city but live outside it?

NYC personal income tax is a resident tax, so people who live outside the five boroughs generally don't owe it on wages earned in the city. They may still owe New York State income tax as nonresidents. If you live outside the city, use the New York State calculator instead.

How is NYC tax calculated on a paycheck?

The city tax uses the same taxable income as your New York State return — gross pay minus the New York standard deduction in this estimate — and applies the city's four rates to it. Employers withhold it alongside state tax using the state's NYC withholding tables.

Why might my real paycheck differ from this estimate?

This estimate covers federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, New York State tax and NYC tax on wages. It doesn't include pre-tax benefits such as a 401(k) or health insurance, New York disability and paid family leave deductions, dependent exemptions, or city credits, and withholding tables round differently from an annual calculation.

Does this calculator include Yonkers tax?

No. Yonkers residents pay a separate surcharge based on their New York State tax, which this page doesn't calculate. The NYC rates here apply only to residents of the five boroughs.
