How taxes work in Oklahoma

Oklahoma uses a progressive state income tax with marginal rates ranging from 2.5% to 4.5%. As with the federal system, only the portion of your income that falls inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.

Before the brackets apply, Oklahoma subtracts a standard deduction of about $6,350 for single filers.

These state brackets are applied in addition to federal income tax and FICA, all of which are withheld from each Oklahoma paycheck.

What changes an Oklahoma paycheck?

House Bill 2764 replaced Oklahoma's six brackets with three and cut the top rate from 4.75% to 4.5%. For a single filer the tax is 0% up to $3,750, 2.5% to $4,900, 3.5% to $7,200 and 4.5% above that; joint filers and heads of household use $7,500, $9,800 and $14,400. Nearly all of a typical salary is therefore taxed at 4.5%.

Before those rates apply, the standard deduction removes $6,350 for single filers, $12,700 for married filing jointly and $9,350 for head of household, and the personal exemption removes another $1,000 for you and $1,000 for a spouse. The Oklahoma Tax Commission withholding tables (Packet OW-2) use the same $1,000 allowance value.

Oklahoma levies no local income tax and has no state disability or paid-leave payroll deduction. Extra exemptions for dependents, age 65 or older and blindness are not modeled.
